Things to Do in Hout Bay: Chapman's Peak, the Harbour & Seal Island
A practical guide to the best of Hout Bay on Cape Town's Atlantic Seaboard: the legendary Chapman's Peak Drive, the working harbour, boat trips to the seals, the Bay Harbour Market, hiking, beach horse rides, and World of Birds.
Tucked into a mountain-ringed valley about 20 kilometres from central Cape Town, Hout Bay feels like its own small world. It still works for a living as a fishing harbour, yet it sits within easy reach of the city, the Constantia winelands, and the Cape Peninsula's wilder edges. Here is how to make the most of a day โ or several โ in the bay.
Drive Chapman's Peak
No visit is complete without Chapman's Peak Drive, one of the most scenic coastal roads in the world. The 9-kilometre toll road carves along the cliff face between Hout Bay and Noordhoek, with the Atlantic dropping away below and the mountain rising sheer above. There are several marked viewpoints where you can pull over for photos.
Good to know - "Chappies" is a toll road; keep a card or cash handy at the booth. - It occasionally closes in high winds, heavy rain, or for events โ check the status before you set off. - Sunrise and golden hour give the cleanest light and the quietest road.
If you'd rather not drive, the route is also a favourite with cyclists and is the setting for the annual Cape Town Cycle Tour each March.
The Harbour & Mariner's Wharf
Hout Bay's harbour is the genuine article โ trawlers, fishing boats, and the smell of salt and diesel. At its heart is Mariner's Wharf, a long-running emporium and fish market where you can buy fresh catch, sit down to fish and chips, or watch the boats come in. It's an unpretentious, very local way to spend an hour, and a fine spot to gauge the rhythm of the bay.
Boat Trip to Seal Island
From the harbour, short boat cruises run out to Duiker Island, often called Seal Island, a rocky outcrop just offshore that's home to a colony of Cape fur seals. The trips usually take around 40 minutes return and pass close enough to watch the seals lounging and swimming, with seabirds wheeling overhead. Several operators run regular departures through the day; conditions can be breezy on the water, so a windbreaker helps.
Bay Harbour Market
For food, craft, and atmosphere, time your visit around the Bay Harbour Market. Set in a converted fish factory near the waterfront, it brings together dozens of food stalls, local makers, and live music. It typically runs on weekends (and Friday evenings in the warmer months), drawing a relaxed mix of locals and visitors. Come hungry โ the variety, from Cape Malay curries to fresh oysters and craft beer, is half the fun.
Hiking & the Mountains
The valley is hemmed in by walkable peaks. The trail up to the old East Fort gun battery above Chapman's Peak Drive is short and rewarding, with cannons and sweeping bay views. More ambitious hikers tackle routes toward Karbonkelberg or the longer traverses on Table Mountain National Park land. As anywhere on the Peninsula, hike in a group, start early, and check the weather, which can turn quickly.
Horse Riding on the Beach
Hout Bay Beach is a broad sweep of sand at the head of the bay โ pleasant for a stroll, and the launching point for one of the area's signature experiences: horse riding along the beach. A local stable offers guided rides where you can trot along the shoreline with the mountains as a backdrop. It's suitable for beginners and a memorable way to see the bay from saddle height.
World of Birds
A short way inland sits World of Birds, the largest bird park in Africa, home to hundreds of bird species plus small mammals and a popular monkey jungle you can walk through. Set in lush, walk-through aviaries, it's an easy, shaded outing that works especially well with children or on a day when the wind is up on the coast.
A Comfortable Base for It All
What makes Hout Bay so rewarding is how much sits within a few minutes of each other โ harbour, beach, market, mountains, and the start of Chapman's Peak. Basing yourself in the valley itself, rather than commuting from the city, means you can catch the harbour at sunrise, linger at the market, and still be back for sunset without long drives.
A central, comfortable guest house makes that effortless, and CUBE Guest House is a natural choice: well placed for the bay's highlights, designed with care, and an easy springboard for the wider Cape Peninsula. From here, Chapman's Peak, the seals, and the winelands are all an easy reach.
Plan Your Day
For a first visit, a simple loop works well: an early harbour walk and boat trip, the market or Mariner's Wharf for lunch, a drive over Chapman's Peak in the afternoon, and World of Birds or a beach ride to fill the gaps. Whatever order you choose, Hout Bay rewards an unhurried pace โ and a good base in the heart of it makes all the difference.
